Haritha Karma Sena

A People-Centric Initiative in the Sanitation and Waste Management Sector The Haritha Karma Sena is an initiative operating within the sanitation and waste management sector of Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs) in Kerala. These squads were formed in 2017 as part of the 'Haritha Keralam Mission' (Green Kerala Mission) implemented by the Government of Kerala. In accordance with government orders, members of the Haritha Karma Sena directly collect inorganic waste (and, in some areas, organic waste) from households and establishments, charging a user fee determined by the respective local bodies. The collected inorganic waste is transported at regular intervals to a 'Material Collection Facility' (MCF). There, the waste is sorted and sent to a 'Resource Recovery Facility' (RRF), from where it is subsequently handed over for reuse or recycling. As part of these operations, the Haritha Karma Sena also provides methods and solutions for managing organic waste at the household level. The Haritha Keralam Mission, Kudumbashree, Suchitwa Mission, Clean Kerala Company, and Local Self-Government Institutions are all partners in this major initiative. The Haritha Karma Sena (Green Action Force) processes tonnes of waste across the state. The force strives to achieve self-reliance by manufacturing new products from waste, promoting recycling, and launching innovative green initiatives. Currently, over 36,000 Haritha Karma Sena members are active across the state's local self-government institutions. Essential infrastructure, vehicles, uniforms, and identity cards are provided to them under the leadership of these local bodies.
